TheDanube Bridge at Rousse - Giurgiu, also known as the Bridge ofFriendship, is the main road and the only bridge so far linking the twocountries across the Danube on the about 500 km border between Bulgariaand Romania. It was officially opened on June 20, 1954, as it wasEurope’s biggest of the time combined bridge with railway and motorway. The main architect of the project was V. Andreev, and theconstruction of the bridge was completed between 1952 -1954 by Bulgariaand Romania with the contribution by neighbor countries and the USSR.It is 2,8 km long and 30 m. high above the water surface of the river –on two levels – for railroad and car traffic. The middle part of thebridge is mobile so it could be lifted in cases of big ships crossingthe river.
